Dealing with Mental Health at the Workplace: Advocating for Psychological Well-being

Your experience and adventures as well as your goals are my top priority

While we can openly and shamelessly discuss physical ailments, we often struggle to talk about our mental challenges. On the occasion of the International Day of Mental Health, we want to bring the topic of mental health to the forefront, raise awareness, and promote a stronger focus on our psychological well-being.

Part 1: Understanding the Topic

In Germany, approximately 27.8% of the adult population is affected by a mental illness each year. This equates to about 17.8 million people. The most common conditions are anxiety disorders, followed by mood disorders and disorders related to alcohol or drug consumption.

Part 2: Distinguishing Between Stressors and Disorders

The transition between mental stressors and mental disorders can be fluid. In the case of stressors, typically, one’s everyday functionality remains intact, while mental disorders significantly limit one’s daily life.

Mental Stressors:

  • Changes in mood and disposition
  • Difficulties in social interactions
  • Issues with concentration
  • Diminished motivation and interest
  • Doubts and insecurities
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Changes in eating habits
  • Physical discomfort
  • Other changes in perception and processing

Mental Disorders:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Depression
  • Disorders related to alcohol or drug consumption

Part 3: Support for Individuals with Mental Disorders

It is crucial to support individuals with mental disorders in the same way we support those with physical ailments.

  • Being present and offering support
  • Gathering information about available resources
  • Easing their daily life
  • Creating small moments of joy
  • Seeking professional help

Part 4: Addressing the Issue in the Workplace

Everyone can contribute to creating a supportive environment in the workplace.

Leadership:

  • Promote awareness
  • Introduce support and counseling services
  • Encourage a culture of transparency and collaboration

Managers:

  • Lead by example
  • Encourage open and transparent conversations
  • Inquire about the well-being and needs of the team

Colleagues:

  • Foster an open and compassionate atmosphere
  • Offer support in the daily work routine
  • Inquire about the well-being and needs of the team

Individuals Affected:

  • Seek professional help
  • Prioritize their health, including considering taking a break
  • Plan changes in their daily work routine

Mental health in the workplace is of paramount importance. Together, we can contribute to creating an environment that promotes psychological well-being and ensures that individuals with mental disorders receive the support they need. We stand together for mental health and advocate for a healthy work environment.
