Team development describes the process of a team from the first contact to a clear division of roles and work in order to achieve a specific goal or task. Teams have to find a way how they want to interact and communicate and develop specific and practiced processes and rituals. Team development measures accompany teams in their processes, which can also be described in five phases.
Team building is a prerequisite for a strong and successful team. Each team needs to find the right space for each member and create a safe space where all members feel recognized and supported. Team building is particularly important in the orientation or finding phase and in changes, but can also be valuable if the team members experience conflicts or problems.
Team development and team building measures are similar – both processes use coaching, psychological methods and specific exercises and activities. Training and education are more important in team development, while team building uses even more fun activities and games to strengthen cohesion.
